NLP Vs Therapy

Today was my seminar with Dorothy Rowe which I have been looking forward to for ages – to be honest I was really disappointed!
Don’t know whether it was the people who arranged the workshop or the type of people who usually go to these things or whether after a week spent with Richard Bandler learning NLP I am incredibly sceptical but from the outset I was silently screaming “NO”!
Last week, one of the key things I learnt and was repeated again and again was that with NLP ‘therapy’ there is no need to rehash the past, to hear every detail of the clients past, that the need to get clients to experience every detail of every horrible experience is at best unnecessary and at worst voyeuristic. And yet the first hour today was spent discussing the need to get clients to talk, to hear everything that has happened and to understand the context in which the experience happened. Why? Why will reliving the bad experience again and again help?
Sat round with a bunch (what is the collective term?) of deeply earnest psychiatrists, psychologists and psychotherapists discussing how their clients ‘have depression’ was, unsurprisingly, a very depressing morning! So much so, I sneaked out after lunch and went home! I figured I had better things to do than sit listening to stuff I profoundly disagree with – I went to the seminar to hear Dorothy Rowe speak about her book not to dissect the intricacies of therapy since 1950!

If this morning did anything it was to teach me that some of the techniques Richard Bandler et al teach are more effective, quicker, less invasive and more positive than so many of the traditional therapy schools – tbh when they started to put Freud on a pedestal today I knew I was on hiding to nothing. Freud theories always struck me as somewhat peculiar and after last week, my distrust only deepened further so to hear people say we need to embrace Freud to understand our clients was when I started to visualise how much housework I could get done if left early!
All in all, a disappointing day but onwards and upwards!
Reality and Clarity!

Well, apart from feeling like I am living inside a Richard Bandler-induced happiness bubble this week, its been strange but good to get back to some kind or normality!
Back to training but with a new plan and a new focus, back to a clean and lean diet and back to the day job! I do feel invigorated and have a new focus on the business though, have had a load of good ideas that I need to start investigating and developing so would hope to launch some new products later this year, which is really exciting!

Having had a week off from the day job I have loads of stuff to catch up on but to be honest, I could do with another week off to catch up on housework, family and business planning and development! Thinking about it all, I have had a really intense few months but I cannot believe how much I have achieved and how much I have squeezed into my life – I think the difficulty will be settling back into a routine and finding day-to-day challenges that excite and drive me as much as the academic ones have the last few months.

One moment of extreme clarity though is that I absolutely LOVE being a Personal Trainer – I love seeing the changes in people as their confidence grows and their fitness levels improve, its great to see the changes and know that you are helping them to get to their goals. I get such a kick out of stepping things up a notch and watching the scared face turn into an exhilarated one as they realise that they CAN do it – it really is a fantastic feeling and I know that if I can develop my NLP skills its something I can really tap into; the thought that I could help people achieve even a fraction of the stuff we learnt last week is just mind-blowing!

All in all I feel happier, more positive, more alive than at any other time in my life and I wish I had had a fraction of this knowledge years ago – just think where my life could be if I had implemented these techniques a few years back. I am definitely going to sign both the children up for the NLP courses and if they can harness their potential at their young ages the world really is their oyster!
World Domination

It’s no good. If I just go for a successful business or a great revenue stream that really is thinking too small…Richard said we can do anything so personally I am aiming for Global Domination!!!!
Yesterday was the first day back to reality and try as I might I can’t actually get a handle on anything specific from last week – that is either Richard and John’s amazing techniques or complete brain overload; the one thing I am sure of though is my brain is buzzing with ideas, opportunities, plans and goals and I really can’t wait to start putting them into action.
Loads of new ideas for business development of the PT side of things plus some really good ideas to develop the NLP area – it was good to get some feedback from different people on the website and business name and reassured me that I have done the right thing; had a couple of marketing people give me some advice and the overall feedback was very positive! Yay go me!!

Desperate to book the Master Practitioner course for October but in all reality I can’t stretch the finances to cover that one as well on top of everything else I want to do so I will have to park that idea until next year and use the space to develop the business and get some experience using the techniques. That way by the time I come to take that qualification I will be a bit more experienced and can hopefully use what I learn a bit better – well that’s my rationale anyway! It will also give me a bit of time to develop one of my other ideas (shh, still very secret squirrel…….where?!)
Anyway, life is pretty damn good right and rather than have an inner cheer leader I think I should just embrace the concept completely and be my own cheer leader 24/7 – I know what I want, where I want to go and what I need to do. I understand what I need in my life and who provides me with the love, support and understanding to be there on my journey. Life is fantastic, challenging but bright, full of possibilities, hopes, dreams and potential.
First day of the rest of my life………..

Sounds scary doesn’t it? Woke up this morning feeling, well, excited; its like when you are getting ready for a first date or to go on fabulous holiday and you feel excited, nervous, full of anticipation and to think I get to feel like that about the rest of my life, how cool is that?!
So, grabbing hold of my life and squeezing every last inch of happiness and fun out of it I am off to the gym for a PT session and then I have client this afternoon; I can’t wait to start applying the techniques and language patterns to every day life and to see how they can enrich all areas of my life.
First things first; GOALS. I have always thought goals were important to me and that was reinforced when Paul McKenna did his timeline exercise last year, my goals became really clear and have guided my decision making the last few months. Don’t think I would have achieved all I have the last six months without having understood my goals and the steps that form a part of each one.
No matter what you are doing, or in what area of your life, it’s really important to understand two things;
- Where you are now
- Where you want to be
We all need to understand where we are now, how we feel, what that looks like – it is only by understanding this that we can recognise
what we want and how we want to feel so spend a few minutes today thinking about how you feel now, your achievements, successes, troubles, worries etc anything that helps to get a handle on where you are in your life right now!
Now think about what you really want your life to look like, where do you want to be, what do you want to achieve and when – what does that look like, what does it feel like, what do you see, what do you hear. Do you truly understand what your hopes, dreams and goals are?
If we can understand where we are and where we want to be we can better understand the steps needed to bridge that gap and rather than it seeming like a vast chasm between the two points it can become a ladder of smaller steps each one building to the ultimate end goal of a brighter better future.
Have a wonderful, happy, healthy weekend.
X
It’s over….

Final day of the NLP course and on the train this morning at 7am I was weirdly chirpy, smiling at everyone – goodness knows what they thought but pesky Bandler and La Valle have obviously got inside my head! Not actually sure I want them to leave though!
At home now after finishing today and it’s really tough knowing this is the last day, that all of us will go off to our own lives now and I hope we stay in touch but conscious everyone says that and doesn’t whilst we are getting on with our lives and because…….!
The total immersion of the course means you make some really good friends over the week and there are some people there who have enriched my life and taught me lessons about myself, my business and friendship: Carol you are amazing and I cannot believe that I met someone as uplifting as you at Get the Life You Want and that we managed to meet up again for this one – you really have been my anchor and thank you for everything; Lucy you have made me think of business in new ways and inspired me to try new things, I hope we really can make things work on a joint project and I predict I bright future for us both; and Michael, your sense of calm, your peace, your curiosity was amazing and I know you will be a fantastic life coach. Lets all try to meet up again in a few months and set up our own NLP support group?
Anyway Day 7 final day and we have a test…..yuk wasn’t prepared for that!! But it was fantastic, fun, engaging and a great chance for us
to see what we really know without stressing about it. Left for lunch feeling energised, happy, confident and knowing that all of us have learnt far more than we ever realised!
TBH my head is SOO full of NLP stuff and I think I am having trouble processing everything we have learnt but I suspect that that is part of the technique – your brain is busy trying to work out the first part the unconscious part is already handling the rest, applying it easily….. I hope!
Anyway, right now I feel like a different person and am clear I want to take this further to see what I can do more of this everyday (just practising techniques…. don’t you just love that ambiguity?!).
Although I haven’t had the space to think YET I wanted to capture the spirit of the course, the wonder and amazement, the sense of peace, happiness and potential that it has instilled in, I think, all of us. I am so happy I cannot believe how amazing I feel and know that whatever I choose to do it will be done with far greater awareness that only I can hold myself back and whatever my hopes and dreams, they are there for the taking. I can do anything I want and life, right now, is looking pretty damn amazing!
Thank you so much to everyone at NLP Life Training, the course was incredible; Richard Bandler is a genius, John La Valle has given me so much insight into how to apply techniques in the business world it has opened my horizons and Kathleen has taught me more about language than I ever thought possible. All in all it has been a FANTASTIC week and to anyone who is interested, if you ever get the chance to train with Richard and John, just do it – it will change your life!
Day 6 NLP Practitioner Course

Ok, day six and boy I SOOO don’t want this to end. It’s like the most intense experience you can imagine with all of us existing in an NLP bubble all week! Reality is going to come as a bit of a surprise tomorrow night!!
Amazing day (as usual) Richard was on good form teaching techniques and sprinkling anecdotes liberally as always. Left at lunchtime feeling very spaced out but oh so happy!!
The surprise to all of us has been John La Valle (he said he would grow on us or was that an embedded command??) his use of metaphors, language and above all his amazing trance(s). Left this evening feeling uplifted and inspired with a strange sense of calm or peace. The intensity and clarity were so overwhelming that both Carol and I cried but left the hall feeling as if we had renewed insight into our lives.
I haven’t ever experienced anything like this course before, the intensity, the life changing experiences that happen several times a day to ALL of us, the way in which all the baggage we all have is totally stripped away or transformed.
I have so much I want to do now, that I will do – if I thought the Get the Life You Want course changed my life I can only imagine the possibilities ahead of me, the potential I can reach.
For me, this course should be compulsory, the techniques should be taught in schools, anyone and everyone should do it. If we can all benefit like this imagine how much good we could all do if we just applied what we have learned? For me, I wish I had known this stuff years ago but am booking my daughter in for the Get the Life You Want course later this year and know I will be booking the Master Practitioner course as soon as I can. I want to help people be happier, live healthier happier lives, to see and reach their potential.
All in all I have to say thank you to the amazing team who put this together; you have changed my life – and there is still one day to go!!
Day 5 NLP Seminar – Phobia Day

The day I have been dreading and excited about in equal amounts finally came and after demonstrating some techniques they bought a tarantula into the conference room. Sat in the front row I was in pieces and crying before they even got it out of the case!
However, I followed all the instructions and managed to calm myself and then worked on the phobia cure – I cannot believe I held a spider, a huge furry, moving tarantula crawled across my hand whilst I smiled, I didn’t freak out, I didn’t scream, I smiled! In fact, she really was rather cute, warm and furry with little leather-like pads on the feet!
Truly, if I can do that, if I can get over something that has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember I really can do ANYTHING!
I cannot thank Richard Bandler and the team from NLP Life Training enough; they are changing lives every day, including mine! I have had the most amazing day of my life and I feel incredible…only wish I had a bit more support from the people in my life, it would be good to really feel that my family and friends cared enough about me to want to share in my happiness.
But, to all the people in my life who are so wrapped up in their own stuff to be interested in me or my news or my happiness I will take John La Valle’s sentiments and apply them liberally #*%£ it! You really had to be there!!
Day 4 NLP Seminar

0835: Here we are again waiting to go in and although I am tired I can’t wait to see what today will bring.
Been thinking about my relationships with family and with friends; what works, what doesn’t work, positive, negative and most of all how those relationships affect me and how I can change them.
12:30: Lunchtime and another amazing session with Richard finishing with a trance. Feel so alive and positive but slightly anxious about tomorrow’s phobia day – I hate spiders and moths so if he can get me over that it would be incredible!
Have much more of a sense of what is possible now, how much I can achieve. Life is just full of options and we should all enjoy every second of it!
18:50: On train home after long afternoon session with John and Kathleen La Valle. Lots of language stuff with Kathleen and interesting
to start noticing language patterns in ourselves and others. Johns session was more language but its more about the application. Was really long and got a bit tedious towards the end but he finished with a really great trance for goals and motivation.
This course has made me even more sure that although there is stuff in my head that is getting sorted there are so many ways it can be applied to help other people. Weight loss and fitness seem a perfect fit but so many of us are so screwed up it would cool to be able to help people live happier more fulfilling lives.
Weirdly I am really looking forward to embracing the challenges tomorrow knowing I can do anything I set my mind to – I don’t have
to settle for anything!
Bring on the tarantula!!
Day 3 NLP Seminar

Well, if I thought I felt good yesterday I was wrong. Richard Bandler is a genius, I feel amazing and all the stuff that was bothering me last week seems totally irrelevant.
The notion that we all carry all this stuff in our heads that holds us back and stops us reaching our potential seems stupid – if we only understood that we can change our state, our emotions and get rid of negative nonsense we would all be so much happier.
We all have our issues, our past, our relationships etc but it is how we choose to respond to them now and in the future that will determine our success and ultimately our happiness.
Grab every opportunity you have in life, stop thinking about the bad stuff and concentrate on all the fabulous stuff around you.
I can’t wait until tomorrows session………………just so long as it isn’t phobia day!!

Ok I’m on the 0730 train to London for day three and tbh, I am really physically tired. The long days and travelling are definitely taking it out of me but mentally and emotionally i feel sharp, bright and irritatingly perky!!
Need some quiet reflection time to process all of this but the underlying sense of unlimited potential and possibility just envelopes me. I cannot wait to see what today will bring!!
